The subject focuses on the theory supporting behavior in the health sector. It is structured in 8 different chapters that deal with relevant topics such as: Growth and health, efficiency in the delivery of health services, equity in health and allocation of resources, different health systems and reforms, economic evaluation of health programs, Cost-effectiveness Analysis and Cost Utility Analysis among others.

Descriptors

This subject applies economic concepts to the field of health and health services. It is focused on analyzing the behavior of the demand and supply in the health market as well as the efficiency and equity of health systems. The main goal is that the student will learn to apply economic models of how agents make individual and collective decisions to health.

Previous knowledge: It is advisable to have studied previously Public economy I and some knowledge on econometric programs such as Eviews, and/or Gretl but it is not requested.

Learning outcomes

R_MEP_08. To learn about the Public Sector role in the health market, the behavior of different agents, the efficiency problems related to the public sector management of health provision and discuss about different policies to improve the management of the public health sector.

R_MEP_09. To learn how the economic evaluation of health technologies and health programs work and how to measure health states preferences, identifying the weak and strong points of each of the methodologies.

R_MEP_12. Analyze the decentralization in Spain as well as the local systems of financing applied to health.
