Throughout the European Union, social work has become a mandatory point of reference when discussing the Welfare State. Some European countries were forerunners in both the reflection on and practice of social work in terms of the social policies in their States. Others gradually took on this task during the process of democratizing their societies and implementing the Welfare State. Today, there is no longer any doubt about it; social work and social services ensure a society with more justice, based on the rights and obligations of its citizens and their active participation in the creation and use of the resources belonging to society. This, however, raises important questions: How should Social Work react to the current crisis? What professional practice and what scientific reflection are able to maintain the Welfare State in Spain and in the other European countries?
As part of the 15th European Symposium on Social Work, participants (professionals, scientists, representatives of social institutions and politicians from several European countries) wish to highlight the goals achieved, scientific advances and social practice throughout Europe over the last 20 years. On the one hand, we aim to establish the next objectives, goals and challenges that social work is going to face in the European Higher Education Area (education and research). On the other hand, we will deal with professional practice in social services, as a way to ensure the rights and wellbeing of all European citizens.
